2018 National Nutrition Month – “Go Further with Food”

National Nutrition Month is a nutrition education and information campaign created annually in March by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. The campaign focuses attention on the importance of making informed food choices and developing sound eating physical activity habits.

"Go Further with Food" is the theme for 2018, and its importance is timely for many reasons. Whether it's starting the day off right with a healthy breakfast or fueling before an athletic event, the foods you choose can make a real difference. Preparing your foods to go further, by planning meals and snacks in advance can also help to reduce food loss and waste. This year's theme for National Nutrition Month® encourages us to achieve the numerous benefits healthy eating habits offer, but it also urges us to find ways to cut back on food waste. Learning how to manage food resources at home will help you "Go Further with Food", while saving both nutrients and money.

Sustainability - Eat Right

Eat Right – Healthy Eating on a Budget

Getting the most nutrition for your food budget starts with a little extra planning before you shop. There are many ways to save money on the foods that you eat.    Saving money at the supermarket doesn’t mean giving up nutritious foods, however.  When money is tight and time is short, it may seem difficult to maintain a healthy diet. But mealtime doesn't have to be costly, complicated, or unhealthy: eating right can be affordable, convenient and nutritious.

Be Fit – Fuel your Fitness

Nutrition is important for fitness.  Eating a well-balanced diet can help you get the calories and nutrients you need to fuel your daily activities, including regular exercise. When it comes to eating foods to fuel your exercise performance, it’s not as simple as choosing vegetables over doughnuts. You need to get the right types of food at the right times of the day. Learn about the importance of healthy breakfasts, workout snacks, and meal plans.

Live Well – Food Safety

Nutrition and food safety have a lot to do with your health. The USDA’s Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommends eating a variety of fruits and vegetables each day. However, many commonly held beliefs about  food preparation may actually be, at the very least misleading and at the worst, harmful to your health. Handling foods safely is much more than throwing away expired milk or washing your fruits and vegetables. While these actions are important, there are several more common food safety mistakes that can result in major consequences. Don't be one of the 48 million Americans sickened by food poisoning each year.
